THE BOOK

LAWRENCE SHILLER. MARILYN & ME: A MEMOIR IN WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHS

Just months before her death, Marilyn Monroe gave a young photographer his big break, and this is his story:

“You’re already famous, now you’re going to make me famous,” photographer Lawrence Schiller said to Marilyn Monroe as they discussed the photos he was about to shoot of her. “Don’t be so cocky,” Marilyn replied, “photographers can be easily replaced.” The year was 1962, and Schiller, 25, was on assignment for Paris Match magazine. He already knew Marilyn, they had met on the set of Let’s Make Love, but nothing could have prepared him for the day she appeared nude during a swimming pool scene for the motion picture Something’s Got to Give.

Marilyn & Me is an intimate story of a legend before her fall and a young photographer on his way to the top. Schiller’s original text and extraordinary photographs over two thirds of which have never or rarely been published take us back to that time, and to the surprising connection that allowed Marilyn to bond with a kid from Brooklyn, a kid with a lot of ambition but very little experience. Now, 50 years later, TASCHEN is publishing Lawrence Schiller’s story as a signed, for the year of Monroe’s untimely death. Schiller’s is a story that has never been told before, and he tells it with tact, humor, and compassion. The result is a real and unexpected portrait that captures the star in the midst of her final struggle.

TOM FORD: TABACCO VANILLE

A smooth oriental, Tobacco Vanille opens immediately with opulent essences of tobacco leaf and aromatic spice notes. The heart unfolds with creamy tonka bean, tobacco flower, vanilla and cocoa, and finishes with a dry fruit accord enriched with sweet wood sap.

“Private Blend is my own scent laboratory; it’s where I have the ability to create very special, original fragrances that are unconstrained by the conventions of mainstream scent-making. Private Blend is designed with the true fragrance connoisseur in mind”. Tom Ford

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN MEN’S SPRING/SUMMER 2014

CEREMONIAL DRESSING: THE RITES OF PASSAGE OF A MAN

Collection: Faded fabrics that feel they have been left out in the sun and tarnished gold buttons. Hems, lapels and sleeves are unfinished and frayed. The internal structure of suiting is removed to give lightness. The sleeves of a frock coat have been ripped away with seams and shoulder padding left exposed. The silk lining of the suit jacket is introduced as a button-down robe or cardigan, layered over collarless bib shirts and exposed from the sleeves and hem of suit jackets. Worn with pleated loose, long shorts or trousers cropped above the ankle.

Fabrics: The iconic McQueen skull motif is reworked into a cotton lace. The lace is adapted as a print. Distressed floral jacquards. Cotton ticking with embroidered black roses or screen-printed by hand to create a mottled photocopy effect. Washed silk, cashmere and cotton. Engineered brocade jacquard.
