THE BOOK

MADONNA BY ANDREW MORTON

Madonna is a biography by American author Andrew Morton, chronicling the life of American recording artist Madonna. The book was released in November 2001 by St. Martin’s Press in the United States and in April 2002 by Michael O’Mara Books in the United Kingdom. Morton decided to write a biography on Madonna in 2000. The release was announced in April 2001 by St. Martin’s Press. President and publisher Sally Richardson described the biography to contain details about Madonna’s ambitions, her relationships and her lifestyle.

Morton interviewed about 70 people who had known Madonna since her youth. He had to spend a lot of evenings in bars and clubs in New York chatting to people including artists, musicians, and directors, who had an interesting perspective on Madonna and the world. After its release, Madonna received mixed reviews from contemporary critics, who pointed out Morton’s poor writing skills and felt that the book did not present anything new about the singer. The book was a commercial disappointment. In the United States, the book reached eight on The New York Times Best Seller list, and sold half of its initial print.

Madonna herself was critical of Morton writing a biography on her life, and sent a letter to him, asking him to stay away from her family and friends. Morton remained unabashed, saying that he wrote the book because of his interest in the star, not least because she has made a “difference” to pop culture and modern culture. In 2004, a lawsuit was filed against the author by Jim Albright, one of Madonna’s ex-lovers mentioned in the book. The lawsuit regarded an image in the book, portraying one of Madonna’s gay dancers with Albright’s name underneath. United States District Court ruled out the lawsuit explaining that stating someone is homosexual does not libel or slander them.

Born in Bay City, Michigan, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in modern dance and performed in the music groups Breakfast Club and Emmy. In 1982, Madonna signed with Sire Records (an affiliate of Warner Bros. Records) and released her self-titled debut album the following year. Madonna is known for continuously reinventing both her music and image, and for retaining a standard of autonomy within the recording industry. BEAUTY

FRAGRANCE

MADONNA: TRUTH OR DARE MADONNA

The company Coty has signed an agreement with MG Icon to launch this fragrance named Truth or Dare. The fragrance is for women from 25 to 45, with the group of 35-45 as the primary aim.

“I have always been obsessed by fragrance and for years wanted to create something personal that was an expression of me, but that other people could relate to as well. Something classical and timeless and yet modern. My oldest memory of my mother is her perfume. I carry it with me everywhere. She always smelled like gardenias and tuberose, an intoxicating mixture [that was] feminine and mysterious. I wanted to re-create this scent, but with something fresh and new about it as well. Something honest and yet daring hence the name Truth or Dare”, said Madonna to wwd.

Madonna was reportedly deeply involved in the process of making her perfume. She has worked with Stephen Nilsen, Givaudan perfumer, to create the composition of white flowers on an intensive gourmand background. The scent is both a light and dark, opening with notes of gardenia, creamy tuberose and neroli. The heart consists of jasmine, benzoin and white lily, based on vanilla absolute, caramelized amber and sensual musk.

The fragrance comes in two formats – as 50 and 75 ml Eau de Parfum, along with body lotion and shower gel.

MADONNA VISITS J/P HAITIAN RELIEF ORGANIZATION IN HAITI

J/P Haitian Relief Organization, along with founder and CEO, Sean Penn, welcomed Madonna and her son, Rocco, to the J/P HRO-managed Petionville Camp in Port-au-Prince, Haiti earlier this week where she witnessed firsthand J/P HRO’s progress in the Haiti reconstruction effort. During their visit, Madonna toured the J/P HRO camp, where there are now less than 2,000 residents in the once tent-city of 60,000 internally displaced citizens, and met with senior program managers, visited its medical facilities, community center and engineering projects and spent time at a J/P affiliated school to connect with students. She also took a tour of the site of the national palace, which J/P HRO cleared last year, and then visited the slums of Cite Soleil.

Through Instagram, Madonna engaged fans in her experience in Haiti, posting photos of the country’s inspiring children and various locales such as the beach of Ile-a-Vache, an island off the southwestern peninsula of Haiti. She encouraged fans to support J/P HRO programs which provide health care, education, construction and the safe return to permanent housing for displaced earthquake survivors residing in the Petionville Camp. This week, Penn launched his own Instagram to raise awareness of J/P’s continuing efforts in Haiti: http://www.instagram.com/seanpenn.

“The progress that has been made in Haiti is extraordinary, but it’s clear there is so much more to be done,” said Madonna. “I’m very inspired by J/P HRO’s dedication and long-term commitment to the families and children of Haiti. What Sean and his organization have done is truly remarkable. They are paving the way to a brighter future for thousands of people. It’s vital that the world stays on course with the reconstruction of Haiti.”

“I was very proud to introduce Madonna and her son to the work we are doing in Haiti,” said Sean Penn. “It is my hope that more people will visit Haiti and see for themselves the beauty, spirit and potential of this great country.”

Madonna’s Ray of Light Foundation is expected to join forces with J/P HRO on their continuing support for the citizens of Haiti. Details will be announced at a later date.
